The Scottish Mining Museum regularly hold special events in many of our onsite locations. Below are a list of forthcoming events in our calendar, make sure they are in yours.

Bouncy Castle Sessions

Bouncy Castle Sessions

Let the kids bounce off some energy on our bouncy castle! Sessions take place in the Old Power House and mums and dads can relax over coffee or lunch while watching the kids play.    £2.50 per child


Sessions will run from 11am - 3pm throughout the summer.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays in July: 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th, 21st 27th and 28th.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays in August: 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th.

SHADES OF MINING: Art from the Scottish Mining Museum Collection

SHADES OF MINING: Art from the Scottish Mining Museum Collection

An exhibition which offers a glimpse into the Art Collection held at the Scottish Mining Museum will open on 18th June and run throughout the summer to the end of August.  The collection comprises of art relating to the mining industry and the communities that grew up around it.  Pieces by artists such as Alastiar Clark, Jim Williams and Bill Melrose capture the imposing grandeur of colliery buildings as well as some of the melancholy that came with the decline of the industry and the fall of many collieries into dereliction. 

The works exhibited are a representative sample of the diverse range of subjects, artists and media held by the Scottish Mining Museum.  Entry to the exhibition is FREE OF CHARGE.

Construction Club: ELECTRIC BUZZER STEADY HAND GAME

Construction Club: ELECTRIC BUZZER STEADY HAND GAME

Spend Wednesday afternoons during the school holidays learning how things work! Explore basic engineering principles to make things move, buzz, grab and tilt.

Build your own version of the classic game used at school fetes. Try to move a circular hand piece along a twisty wire without making it buzz. The model introduces the principles of electricity, switches and circuits.

The Electric Buzzer workshop is Free!

The workshop is on Wednesday 4th August and takes place in the Operations Centre. It is suitable for children 7 years and over. Younger children may take part as long as parents stay and help. There are 10 spaces available for the session and tickets can be booked in advance at reception or by calling 0131 663 7519.

Construction Club: Wacky Racer - Pulley Drive

Spend Wednesday afternoons during the school holidays learning how things work! Explore basic engineering principles to make things move, buzz, grab and tilt.

This model introduces the principle of motors and pulleys and shows how a turning force creates forward motion.

The Wacky Racer workshop is Free!

The workshop is on Wednesday 11th August and takes place in the Operations Centre. It is suitable for children 7 years and over. Younger children may take part as long as parents stay and help. Charity Zip Slide Event / Anthony Nolan Trust

Charity Zip Slide Event / Anthony Nolan Trust

As an important opportunity to take part in a truly unique and exciting event and help take back lives from leukaemia, you couldn't do any better.  15 seconds of pure adrenalin!! 

Be one of the first people to Zip Slide from the top of the Head Frame of the Lady Victoria Colliery!  Hold onto your hats as you fly through the air across the rooftops from a height of 100 feet, 700 feet on your descent.  On a clear day, from the top of the Head Frame you will witness wonderful views across Midlothian to the Pentland Hills, Edinburgh and as far as Fife!

No previous experience is needed and our team of highly skilled instructors will ensure you are equipped with all you need to make your zip slide safe and as enjoyable as possible.

FAMILY FUN DAY

FAMILY FUN DAY

Come along and enjoy a fantastic Fun Day for all the family with pony rides, puppet shows, bouncy castles, face painting, Harley Davidsons, bands, dancers, arts & crafts, miniature railway and much, much more!  Entry fee also includes access to the museums tours and exhibitions.  Don't miss it!  

Tickets available on the gate:  £2.50 per child, £5.00 per adult and £10 per family (2 adults and up to 4 children)

This event coincides with the Anthony Nolan Zip Slipe Fundraising Challenge!  Come along and support the fundraisers!

MIDLOTHIAN DOORS OPEN DAY

MIDLOTHIAN DOORS OPEN DAY

HEADFRAME
Climb the headframe of the Lady Victoria Colliery!  This special behind-the-scenes tour is led by two guides.  Sturdy shoes and jackets (and a good head for heights!!) are essential!  Safety helmets will be provided.  Numbers are strictly limited so please book in advance.  Tour times 10.30, 11.30, 1.30, 2.30 and 3.30. 

BOILER HOUSE TOUR
Tour the Boiler House of the Lady Victoria Colliery and see the Lancashire boilers that powered the colliery.  Sturdy shoes and jackets are advisable.  Safety helmets will be provided.  Numbers are strictly limited so please book in advance.  Tour times 11.30am and 2.30pm.

The two tours are free of charge, however, normal admission fees apply for the museums exhibitions and tours.

This TechCard looks good and uses gears! The workshop introduces principles such as gear ratios.

HALLOWEEN DISCO AND GHOST TOUR FOR KIDS!

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS EVENT

Come along and enjoy a Victorian themed tour with our coal sorter Aggie McGhee and experience what Christmas would have been like for the miners and their families.

Visit Santa in his grotto, have a go at making some Victorian Christmas decorations and ride on the Carousel.

"The Wizard of Oz" - Christmas Theatre Production

M&M Theatrical Production's adaptation of The Wizard of Oz has been brought to life with such care and dedication that Judy Garland herself would be fighting to star in it. The magnificent set designed specifically for touring theatre marks a new level of achievement for M&M's theatre production department and the story has been written with so MUCH care and attention to detail that the audience will really believe 'They're not In Kansas anymore'.

Performances at 3pm and 7pm, suitable for all ages.  Tickets available now priced £5.00 per adult, £2.50 per child, £12.50 for a family of 4.  Call 0131 663 7519.
