Mining Equipment
Miners used various types of equipment both underground and on the surface. Equipment varied greatly in size, from 40ft coal shearers to small picks and drills. Each miner also carried a range of apparatus, such as self-rescuers, lamps and helmets. The Scottish Mining Museum's collection of mining equipment is comprehensive and includes large mining machinery, for example cages and winding engines, tools including those used by support staff such as blacksmiths and ropemen, and safety equipment for instance flame saftey lamps and breathing apparatus.
